Chapter 12

Days, maybe even a couple more weeks, passed, and I could finally go a few hours a day out of bed before I had to go back. No longer was I sweating with a violent fever or needing an IV on me every few hours. My body had adjusted to its new strength and my heart rate slowed to a healthy pace. And just as Theodore had expected, everything about my body had adjusted and changed. My eyesight was better, my sense of smell, and my hearing. I’d even grown another inch, now an annoying six foot three inches. Now we were just waiting for the signs I might shift.

I wasn’t too sure if I wanted to shift though because after I had finally managed the energy to leave the room, Theodore, other than making me get to know the building and finding out just how absolutely excessive the building was, took me outside and showed me how he shifted. I watched as he stood there for a moment after stripping and suddenly, skin turned into scales and before I could register where it started, he changed, then there he was, a massive Dragon. Now that I could get a better, clear-headed look at him, he was definitely over the ten metres tall mark, and I wasn’t sure, I’d have to measure to know for certain, but if he stretched out his wings, he could definitely fit the length of two regular city buses in them.

‘What about the smoke?’ I asked after he’d shifted back and forth a few times. ‘When you’ve shifted in front of me before, there’s been smoke.’

‘Dragons tend to exhale a smoke screen as a privacy cover,’ one of Theodore’s guards, John, said. ‘More for those seeing them than for their selves.’ I looked at him with a raised brow. His face remained stoic, but after getting used to the twins, I’d learnt they weren’t as terrifying as our first encounter made them out as. They were huge, sure, incredibly muscular, but they were handsome men, and since they were fraternal twins, they didn’t look the same. It was easy to tell them apart. Cole, who was Mindy’s soulmate, was an arsehole but caring, and John, Chelsea’s soulmate, was a huge softy, but pretended to be an arsehole. John had long hair while Cole had an army cut, which made him look more like a beefcake than he already did with his massive arms.

‘It’s just something they learn habitually to do,’ Coles said, shrugging.

‘Neat trick, I guess,’ I commented back, watching as Theodore morphed back into Human form.

‘Did you get a good look at how the body looks during?’ Theodore asked once he was fully Human, slipping on the clothes John passed him. I shook my head. ‘May!’

‘The shifting is too quick!’ I defended. He sighed. ‘I saw scales on your skin and then you were a massive lizard. It was too fast.’

‘That’s rude, I am not a massive lizard,’ he retorted in a low voice, slipping on his shirt and fixing his hair.
